This PI ad seems to be pissing off some people...

Even as a 'once slower than Oprah' guy...I love it.

  1. My marathon PR is 4:52, but I'm not pissed.

  2. 7 hours in one of the more popular marathons here in Colorado is actually just a hair over the average finishing time.

  3. I don't get the whole 'It's elitist!' thing. Isn't the whole point of competitive racing to be better than other people? If not and running a popular marathon is a 'just a personal accomplishment' thing, then why run a popular marathon if for no other reason than to post on facebook 'LOOK AT ME I RAN X MARATHON'. I'm probably quite a bit hypocritical here, having been 'that guy', but fuck if I don't sit here stalking results of guys around my level with some conviction that I want to destroy them in a race. I love my friends to death, but I'm still going to shit talk and try my hardest to back it up and destroy them come race time.

  4. ....and Jeff/GZ...you can 'mosey' over the NYC marathon finish line. You can't just 'mosey' over the Pikes Peak marathon finish line, that doesn't count!

  5. Marathon PR is 4:30 for me.

    I was not moseying.

Eh, the PI add does not irk me. I don't get all pumped by it either. I get the eye rolling towards folks who just "do" a marathon, but I have also learned that motivations come in many shapes, flavors and sizes. If someone is moving more because Oprah inspired them to do a marathon in 5 hours, I am not gonna get worked up about it. I am gonna encourage it. And I am gonna encourage that you improve on it.

  6. GZ hit the nail on the head. Different strokes for different folks, as we all have our varied (or like) motivations. I often catch myself rolling my eyes as Bolder Boulder approaches and hear all the non athletes chatting about it here at work and think to myself "were you running when it was snowy and cold and windy?". Now all of a sudden, you are a runner? Then I realize that myself running it is just as rediculous, yet simultaneously fine, as I am not much of a runner and certainly not a road runner, but I have fun with it (at least when work pays for it).

Whatever it may be, a marathon at Oprah pace, walking the Bolder Boulder, step aerobics, tai bo, crossfit or trying to break 5 hours on Pikes Peak, it is all about getting people off the couch and into action. The more the better in my mind.

  7. Love that ad, wish they would have used six hours instead of seven though.

Sounds like GZ is prepping for a political career with his comment. I must be a much better runner than him since my marathon PR is 90+ minutes faster than his though.

Hell, even JV isn't in my league. 4:52? The letsrun trolls would have a field day with that!

  8. With those times, I'll call you all 'joggers' http://www.wearenotjoggers.com/book.html

  9. I get what PI is doing. They are creating an advertising niche. It works. It is appealing. PI is less likely to sell shoes to the Nike Asics Sauconey jogger. Those folks don't have a clue as to who PI or Montrail or La Sportiva or Inov8 are. So don't bother marketing to them.

I still appreciate the person doing something rather than saying "you ran how far? I don't drive that far!"

I need a few more scandals in my life before I enter politics.

  10. Man, these guys are getting hammered. https://www.facebook.com/PearlIzumiRunning bunch of sore pussies. Same guys are probably the ones coaching the kids teams where they give the losers a trophy too. They are playing it pretty shitty with the apologies and backpedaling though. Should have just stuck with it...

  11. While I have no problem with the ad, the ad is NOT offensive. Does it divide to a market niche? Yes. Offensive? No. Hey people - you are slow. Get over it. Doesn't change what you are doing. Don't like PI's ad, don't buy their stuff. Or run-jog-walk more.
