A bit more miles, a bit more gain, a bit faster, and a pretty significant amount less time.
Here were my 2012 goals.
Collegiate Peaks 25mi - Run a 'good' race without major breakdowns or issuesMountain Madness 50k - Run the best race I'm capable of. Focused training throughout the year. I don't want there to be a 'well I could/should have done more/less of X' - No excuses.
I may have a few other races thrown in there, but they won't be of any distance and won't be the main focus of 2012.
Here is what I put out:
Accomplishments (with report links):
5k PR
2012: 21:44/7:00 min/mi (and, 2nd in AG! first Podium!)
Believe it or not, I actually raced 12 races this year.
I PRed almost every one of my trail routes, from Green (thanks to JV), to Doudy Draw
I climbed Longs for the first time, with Shad and Bob.
I was the lowest weight/fittest I've been since HS, I had actually hit 147lbs. (incidentally, right now, I'm also the heaviest I've been in quite a while too!)
Of course, my biggest accomplishment, was Mountain Madness 50k. Shaving 1:20 of my previous years time. An accomplishment that was pretty much 2 years in the making. Much of that was figuring out the hypoglycemia thing and getting the nutrition in check, thanks to Dina.
I owe all of my running accomplishments this year, to pretty much everyone else but myself. Especially, Lucho, for being awesome and coaching me through some real highs and real lows and convincing me, wether he was b.s.ing or not...that I could hit some previously thought to be unobtainable numbers. If I listed everyone else that inspired me and helped me this year, the blog post would be longer than it already is. Lot's of great advice from some good friends and lots of inspiration from others. One fucking comment that still sticks out in my head, almost daily, is a silly comment by some silly guy....
Fucker. But a lot of inspiration in that one stupid line for me. Thanks Bob. Actually, that run was probably my single most key run of the year, if I had to pick one. 14mi with Shad, Bob, and Footfeathers.
Some other highlights were:
Meeting and pacing Dave at the Leadville 100, while watching all of my friends run as well. While I love beating people and hitting PR's, pacing/crewing Leadville is a real close second. I love Leadville.
Following Lucho through the Leadman and our training weekend with Nate in Leadville.
Crewing/Pacing Bob at the Boulder 100.
Crewing/Pacing Bob at the Boulder 100.
I also had some failures.
Collegiate Peaks was horrible and I barely walked it in.
Quite a few horrible runs trying to figure out my nutrition/health problems
Pretty much my entire rest of the year since Mountain Madness has been a failure, where I've run exactly 111mi since 10/1. Yep. I also gained ~25lbs. Ooofa.
2013 Goals
Man, I'd like to list a bunch, but I can't.
- Lose the weight, get back down to 145
- Not burn out so that I put it all back on again next fall/winter
- Have a real FUN time at Trans-Rockies
- PR a 5k
- Learn how to run harder
I don't have any other races planned or any other immediate goals, but I'm open to suggestions!!

No mention of seeing the great Billy Mitchell?
ReplyDeleteI was going to put that burger challenge thing under goals, but I'm pretty sure I can break the FKT for that over anyone who enters. I'm the Kilian Jornet of burger eating.
ReplyDeleteI never bull shit man. But then again I always have faith in my athletes, often times more faith than they have in themselves. I never doubted you for a second. You showed last year that you can do what you set your mind to. Now this coming year set your mind to something great... then go and do it.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm a fucking python with food. I can not eat for a week and then eat 20 pounds of food at once. I'll take the burger challenge.
I am gonna film the next "unbreakable." Lucho the Leadman over here, Jersey boy and the KJ of eating over there. Watch yer backs because here comes the CoS king, Brownie. Was that a belch or a barf?
ReplyDeleteHell, I might even bring the grill for this fun. Joey Chestnut, watch out.
